Comment: The Success of Postcommunism and Nationalism in Central and Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union: Causes, Consequences, Countermeasures
This grant supports the convening of four symposia in Central and Eastern Europe on the problems posed for the new democracies in Central and Eastern Europe by the rise of neo-communist and extreme nationalist parties. The symposia, which would be attended by policy analysts and democratic political figures, will analyze the reasons for the success of the neo-communist parties, the dangers of extreme nationalism, and the consequences of both for democratic reform.
