Geez, if TSG didn't know better, we'd think Stossel's pieces were plotted out before the interviews even occurred. The Nation A Teflon CorrespondentSteve Wilson, [one] of Stossel's early WCBS colleagues, now an investigative reporter at WXYZ in Detroit, was surprised enough by Stossel's rapid rise to stardom and his pro- corporate transformation to ask about it. "I ran into him one day, kidded him about his metamorphosis and asked what had happened," Wilson recalls. "'I got a little older,' John answered. 'Liked the idea of making real money. So started looking at things a little differently.'" David Mastio Prime-time propagandistIs ABC's John Stossel a reporter or a right-wing apparatchik? Stossel has been transformed from a right-leaning bomb-thrower of prime-time news into a full-fledged propagandist in the classroom. The transformation was fostered by an affiliation among ABC News, Stossel and the conservative Palmer R. Chitester Fund, which sells educational materials based on Stossel's ABC reporting. Ted Rose Laissez-Faire TVABC's John Stossel is a man on a mission: to teach Americans about the evils of government regulation and the rewards of free enterprise "I think one John Stossel segment taking a skeptical look at government is worth a million dollars to the movement" Mark Schapiro Strange bedfellows: Journalists as corporate shillsWhy do Americans hate the press? Maybe it's because so many reporters are in bed with the rich and powerful. ...The Stossel case reveals how reporters seemingly in search of "the truth" all too often are compromised by financial and personal connections with the very people and organizations they are covering. |

The links between ABC News, Stossel, and the fund raise important questions about the fairness and transparency of ABC News, as well as the level to which the right wing movement has surreptitiously infiltrated mainstream media. MORE LINKSFAIR's Stossel Watch pageJohn Stossel at SourceWatch.orgThomas J. Mertz FallacyMany of you probably read John Stossel’s polemic in the Sunday Wisconsin State Journal (9/3/06). I’d reprint here, but I don’t want to give it a wider readership than it already has. Instead I want to say few words about a central fallacy in the thinking of Stossel (and many others who wish to destroy public education). Contrary to their rhetoric, PUBLIC EDUCATION IS NOT A MONOPOLY. Media Matters Prompted by Scarborough, Stossel attacked Gore with Myths, Lies, and Downright StupidityOn MSNBC's Scarborough Country, ABC's John Stossel attacked former Vice President Al Gore and delivered a stream of false and misleading claims on global warming. Noting that Gore "implies the argument" about global warming "is over," Stossel repeatedly attempted to downplay, obscure, or deny the threat posed by human-induced global climate change, as depicted in Gore's documentary film An Inconvenient Truth. In fact, the vast majority of climate scientists agree that global warming is occurring and that human activity is contributing to the problem. David Sirota John Stossel Loses Control of His FacultiesI knew it was only a matter of time before ABC News "reporter" John Stossel struck back. Someone as egotistical as him can't let himself be embarrassed on the facts on national television. So today, in Stossel's official ABC email newsletter, he attacked me - though you will notice, he simultaneously distorted my position, and never refuted the argument I made. David Sirota John Stossel Is A Pathological LiarWebster's Medical Dictionary defines a "pathological liar" as "an individual who habitually tells lies so exaggerated or bizarre that they are suggestive of mental disorder." Next to this definition should be this picture - a photo of a self-important, smarmy looking, all-too-coiffed ABC News "reporter" named John Stossel. MediaMatters.org Stossel presented skewed 20/20 segment on "stupid" public schoolsABC's John Stossel presented a "special report" on the failure of American public schools that included a series of misleading claims, a lack of balance in reporting and interviews, and video clips apparently created primarily for entertainment to argue for expanding "school choice" initiatives such as vouchers and charter schools. Daily Howler Stupid is as John Stossel does. Here -- let ABC prove itHow stupid is the public discourse about America’s public schools? Consider John Stossel’s amazingly stupid 20/20 report. The hour-long effort -- titled “Stupid in America” -- aired on ABC Friday night. MediaMatters.org Stossel: Price gouging ensures that scarce resources go only "to those who really need it"In his September 7 syndicated column, ABC News 20/20 co-anchor John Stossel defended price gougers, writing that by charging $20 for a bottle of water to a person whose baby needed it to live, "the price gouger makes sure his water goes to those who really need it." Stossel added: "It was the price gouger's 'exploitation' that saved your child." He justified this claim because price gougers -- people and companies that charge exorbitant prices for scarce and necessary resources (such as water or oil) -- "save lives" because they dependably provide those necessary goods or services to those who need them, motivated by their own self-interest to make money. MediaMatters.org Flouting scientific opinion, Stossel promoted Michael Crichton's global warming skepticismABC News 20/20 co-anchor John Stossel used a report on novelist Michael Crichton's new book, State of Fear, to promote Crichton's view that global warming is "just another foolish media-hyped scare." FAIR Will ABC Balance Stossel's Election Year Axe-Grinding?...after Stossel's July 23 "Give Me A Break" segment on 20/20 about Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards, ABC viewers might be wondering what the network will do to balance Stossel's [Republican] partisanship. Action Alert Does Stossel Deserve a Promotion?..ABC reporter John Stossel will have a new job at 20/20: co-anchor...According to a recent report in TV Guide (5/10/03), one source at ABC says that picking Stossel makes sense: "These are conservative times... the network wants somebody to match the times."...One might hope ABC would be more concerned with hiring a journalist with a record of credible and accurate reporting...For years, Stossel's work has been notable for bungled facts and twisted logic, all in service to his conservative "free market" agenda.
