This grant supports research on the effects of China's economic reforms on the balance of power in the center-provincial relations. Thewill create a database on economic and political variables at the provincial level, which will be used to analyze whether market reforms might contribute to the erosion of central political control in China. The final products of this research will be anedited volume, an analysis of Chinese political institutions, a policy paper, and several journal articles.
