He will write a blueprint for a U.S. policy to encourage Pakistan to adopt a more moderate and democratic political system. The project's findings will appear in a series of monographs and a policy report.

This grant supports commissioned research and seminars, both in the United States and in Russia, on current economic, political and geopolitical trends in the Russian Far East and Eastern Siberia. It will examine the region's evolving relationship with the central government of Russia, China's growing influence in the area, and the role of the region in Russian-Chinese relations. Results will be presented in working papers, a final red an edited volume.

This grant supports a two-year collaborative project with the Center for Strategic & International Studies that will assess and track the level of political, economic, and military integration amongthe states of the former Soviet Union. The project will collect data through fieldwork and research commissioned from local research organizations in the newly independent states and assess the degree of integration ceated by the institutions of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Results will be presented at two conferences and published in a final report.
