This grant supports research on the effectiveness of crime prevention policies. Lawrence Sherman will collect and analyze the results of existing evaluations of crime preverategies and present policy makers with an analysis of the effectiveness of different strategies. The project's fidings will be published in an annual report.

This grant supports the establishment of an independent panel of experts that will review and assess the most significant welfare reform evaluations. The panel will analyze the evaulations and distinguish among those studies that employed good methods and those with weaker research designs or methodological flaws. The resarch findings will be presented at conferences and in publications.

This grant supports research on the Soviet and Russian biological and toxin warfare program. Raymond Zilinskas will conduct research andlysis to determine the potential threat that its legacy poses as a source of technology and expertise for weapons proliferation. The final products will be a series of reports and a book. (This project will be completed at the Monterey Institute of International Studies.)
