Lawrence Sherman will research and write a book on the effectiveness of criminal justice policy initiatives commonly referred to as restorative justice. He will examine the evidence produced by a series of experimental evaluations of restorative justice programs, analyze longitudinal data from a number of jurisdictions that have implemented restorative justice policies, and conduct survey work to determine how many jurisdictions in the United States are incorporating restorative justice policies in their criminal justice systems.

Amy Jordan will conduct an evaluation of the effectiveness of the v-chip as a tool to help parents control the programming that their children see on television. She will follow up on a larger field experiment on the effectiveness of the v-chip with an in-depth examination of why parents do not use the technology even after expressing an interest in it. The project’s findings will be published in a research report and an article for a scholarly journal.

Christopher Koper will examine whether the characteristics of guns and gun dealers have an impact on whether a gun will be used in a crime. He will utilizea database of gun sales in Maryland as well as federal data on gun use in crimes to determine whether there is a relationship between how a gun was purchased and whether it was used in a crime. The project’s findings will be published in scholarly and policy journals.
