Zeyno Baran and Fritz Ermarth will examine the strategies and tactics of Hizb-ut Tahrir al Islamiyya, an extremist Islamic group in Central Asia, and assess strategies to promote a secular balance in Central Asian states. The project's findings will appear in a series of articles and a monograph.

This grant supports an assessment of current U.S. policy toward Iran. The project will examine economic and political developments in Iran and the region to determine whether alternatives tothe present policy of containment would better serve U.S. interests. Based on fieldwork, commissioned papers, and working group meetings, a final report will provide recommendations for U.S. policy.
