Assessing the Fiscal Effects of Block Grants for Welfare

This grant supports an examination of how changes in federal welfare policies affect state spending on an array of anti-poverty programs. The project will construct a model of state spending during the years 1980 to 1994 on a range of programs, including AFDC, Medicaid, and food stamps. It will assess whether changes in federal law during the same period increased or decreased state spending on anti-poverty programs. Aseries of papers emerging from this research will be published as a book.

This grant supports an examination of how employment support and income transfer policies interact with maternal employment and child and family poverty. The rrchers will complete the expansion of a cross-national database to accommodate country-specific measures of social policies and conduct analyses with the database of the relationship between policies and behavior. Findings will be presented in the Luxembourg Income Study Working Papers.

This grant supports research on the role of corruption in undermining the effectiveness of public schools. The researcher will identify the most effective safeguards against future corruption through an examination of the history of school corruption in New York City. The project will result in a book.
