The Picking of the President:
The Parties are Over

The 2000 season begins on Friday, January 14 with "The Picking of the President: The Parties are Over," a program tracing the presidential nomination process from the smoke-filled rooms of conventions past to the open primary of today.

But did the change, considered a great step forward in broadening American democracy, really strengthen our political system? Did our republic find better leaders when party barons had to hash out their differences and find a consensus leader?

Reporter-host Mara Liasson, National Public Radio's White House correspondent, looks for answers to thse questions in the program, which also examines the relationship between political parties and the governments they elect.
